Boat decks are no exception to the wear and tear of time on teak, renowned for its robustness. Subject to weathering, peeling, cracking and other bacterial degradation, decks require regular, rigorous maintenance.
PROTECTING TEAK TO ENHANCE AESTHETICS
Rot-proof and non-slip, teak wood is a noble material, highly prized for decking and boat interiors. The right tools and products must be used to maintain it.
As wood is porous, deck cleaning must be carried out regularly. A sponge is preferable to a brush, which is more aggressive, although it can be used to remove stubborn stains. The use of oxalic acid also brightens the wood and revives its natural color.
Teak is also an oily wood that dries out quickly when exposed to the elements. To regenerate the oleoresin that protects it, it is essential to impregnate it with teak oil from the outset, at least twice a year. Over time, the wood takes on gray tones and loses its aesthetic qualities and compactness. Marine varnishes are available that contain linseed oil, resin, one or more solvents and anti-UV properties to counteract wood wear. For optimum effectiveness, apply several coats, respecting the drying time. Some exotic wood care products, such as deks Olje saturator, combine a varnish and an invigorating oil. This provides a natural finish.
Day-to-day care of this exotic wood must be meticulous, using a soft cloth on the inside. On deck, seawater will help to concentrate moisture in the wood and combat moss more effectively.
